Water Filtration - It's a question of hardness.
Coffee equipment, as well as coffee itself, can be badly effected by limescale found in hard water areas. If you live in a hard water area it will cause a white fur on your kettle's heating element and can cause scum to appear when making tea. If you live in a hard water area and intend to use a filter coffee machine or hot water boiler then you may choose to filter the water before using it, or in the case of the water boiler if it is plumbed in purchase one of standard water filters to remove the scale. However, if you plan to purchase an espresso machine, then it is really essential that you purchase a CTU water filter which will totally remove limescale from 5,500 litres of water (after this amount you will need to change it, we normally track the water consumption, or you can purchase and additional counter which moniters the amount of water passing through your filter). For a guide to water filtration visit the Drinking Water Inspectorate site. The map below is from the DWI site, and gives a rough guide to hard water in England and Wales,
