Fairtrade coffee, which when purchased in bean or ground form, should always have the fairtrade mark (top right) stamped on the box. At Pennine we have selected an espresso blend of Fairtrade origin beans for use with espresso coffee equipment, and Colombian Fairtrade filter ground coffee for use with filter machines. You can purchase these online in our shop. Why choose Fairtrade? International trade may seem a remote issue, but when commodity prices fall dramatically it has a catastrophic impact on the lives of millions of small scale producers, forcing many into crippling debt and countless others to lose their land and their homes. The Fairtrade Foundation exists to ensure a better deal for marginalised and disadvantaged third world producers. Set up by CAFOD, Christian Aid, New Consumer, Oxfam, Traidcraft Exchange and the World Development Movement, the Foundation awards a consumer label, the FAIRTRADE Mark, to products which meet internationally recognised standards of fair trade. The founding organisations were later joined by Britain's largest women's organisation, the Women's Institute. Fairtrade makes a real difference to people's lives:

What is the Fairtrade Mark?
The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent guarantee that informs consumers the third world producers receive a fair deal. In the case of coffee it means:
- it is bought directly from farmer's organisations, cutting out middlemen;
- the farmers receive a guaranteed price, which won't drop below a decent minimum however low the world price falls;
- long-term contracts and credit terms for the farmers, allowing for investment.
The Fairtrade Foundation was set up by CAFOD, Christian Aid, New Consumer, Oxfam, Traidcraft Exchange and the World Development Movement to award a label to products that meet set criteria.
