Our Fairtrade Organic coffee is sourced from two Peruvian co-operatives
Cepicafe - Established in 1995 this is an association of 35 small scale coffee co-ops with 4584 members in the Piura region of North West Peru supplying a total of 168 containers approx 33000 bags of Fairtrade coffee per Annum. Before becoming Fairtrade registered, the farmers sold their coffee to intermediaries at less then half the market price. Many farm workers left the area. The co-operative has enabled the quality of life of the coffee growing families to improve and is an important contribution to the sustainable development of the region.
Cecovasa - Established in 1970 and licensed by Fairtrade in 1993. Cecovasa is comprised of 8 co-operatives and it has 3200 members in the Lake Titicaca region of Peru and supplier 188 containers approx 23000 bags of Fairtrade coffee per annum. Fairtrade certification allowed the co-op to export its product directly to US and European markets and gain a fair price. The c-operative is now so strong that intermediary buyers no longer work in the area. Fairtrade has enabled members of both of these cop-operatives to benefit greatly, both in social and occupational aspects.
Social:-By education of thousands of workers childeren with many now studying in secondary and higher education programs. Womens programs are widespread to provide forums for discussion and training on such topics as first aid, leadership, gender roles and animal husbandry.
Occupational:-Major investments have taken place in the quality of the coffee produced by training, quality systems and environmental initiatives including contributing funds to build a hydroelectric plant at nearby Tunquimayo which will supply energy to the region. Modernisation of equipment is also major investment with computers and printers, as well as more traditional farming equipment of de-pulping machines, pruning saws and humidity scales.
